I belong to a fantasy football team like millions of other people do, but the difference between my Yahoo team and this one is it is for real with people I know.
$50 entry fee. First, second and third place at end of season win the cash. Of course first place wins the most money.
Trades and drop/adds during the season cost $1 each with a max of 8 total per team.
There are twelve of us and we had our draft party Saturday, August 30. Our host and his wife are also league commish and secretary respectively.
Commish provided a 20 pound brisket he smoked and everyone brought sides and deserts...and the delightfully obligatory libations.
We begin each season by drawing numbers to determine the order for our rookie draft. Each team must keep two rookies on their roster throughout the season. If you start a rookie a minimum six games during the regular season you have the option of keeping him the next season. That is how I was able to retain Cordarrelle Patterson (WR-Vikings) for this season. It's not a dynasty or keeper league so Patterson will go back on the draft board next season.
If you keep one former rookie from previous season he is automatically your fifth round pick in the current season. If you keep both former rookies then the seventh round is also an automatic lock.
I drew the number six for the rookie draft. I'm not going to give a blow by blow here of each teams picks. Suffice it to say I ended up drafting Jeremy Hill (RB-Bengals) and Odell Beckham Jr. (WR-NYG)
Now onto the big show.
I drew the number twelve for our regular draft. A lot of people piss and moan about getting the last pick in the first round. I was one of them, but not anymore.
I snagged Brandon Marshall (WR-Bears) with my first pick. Not bad for the first round. The bonus that is included in having the last pick of the first round is you get the first pick in the second round. The draft order snakes up and down so each time it was my turn I got a 'twofer'. I drafted my team two at a time.
So I drafted Marshall and then picked Matt Forte (RB-Bears). No, these two picks were not based on a Bears fixation on my part. They were the cream of the crop that were left of wide receivers and running backs after the first eleven teams made their first round picks.
I had the number one overall pick in the first round two seasons ago and I liked having the last pick of the first round better. Maybe it's just psychological, but picking two players at a time seemed a bit less stressful than a single pick at...say number six and then waiting for your turn again.
Here are the roster positions we have to fill each week: QB RB RB WR WR WR TE K DEF/ST
And you have to remember to balance your team regarding NFL bye weeks. You can really kill yourself if say...you draft two running backs whose teams have the same bye week.
Here are the players I drafted.:
QB - M. Stafford - Lions
QB - A. Dalton - Begals
RB - M. Forte - Bears
RB - D. Sproles - Eagles
RB - Jeremy Hill (Rookie) - Giants
WR - C. Patterson - Lions
WR - B. Marshall - Bears
WR - T. Smith - Ravens
WR - Kenny Stills - Saints
WR - Odell Beckham Jr. (Rookie) - Giants
TE: - V. Davis - 49ers
TE - L. Green - Chargers
K -M. Crosby - Packers
K - M. Prater - Broncos (Yeah, he's suspended, but he'll be back racking up mega points in week six)
DEF/ST - Arizona
DEF/ST - Ravens
