NBC has offered some novel defenses to thwart a home invasion: hit panick alarm on car, sleep next to Hornet/Wasp spray, sleep with bedroom doors open, treat invaders like "royalty" and don't lie to them, and install window-alert alarms.
Notice that nowhere in the report is it suggested you actually own a gun for protection. Better advice would be to obtain professional training on how to use firearms in emergency home-invasion situations and store the gun responsibly with quick access in the home, much like the creator of The Gun Box suggests.
As demonstrated by Linda Sartori, most rational people would first dial 9-11, but if that doesn't work, showing intruders a picture of your cat will work just about as well as NBC's suggestions.
